How to choose inline skates for kids

You'll make a good choice when you look at the boot, liner, chassis, wheels and closure. Below we go through the most important points with short, concrete explanations that both kids and parents can use.

  • Boot: A soft boot feels soft and breathable. It is easy to walk in and gentle on the feet. A hardboot provides more ankle support and precise control. Beginners often thrive in a softboot; kids who need extra support can opt for a firmer outer shell.
  • Liner: A good liner (inner sock) relieves pressure points. Look for even padding, heel grip and moisture management. A removable liner is easy to dry and ventilate after use.
  • Chassis (frame): Chassis determines stability and feel on the tarmac. A shorter chassis (short wheelbase) turns easier and helps small feet steer. A slightly longer chassis provides a steady ride for older children.
  • Wheel diameter: For kids, we prioritize control and easy acceleration. 64-76 mm is typically nice for beginners, while older kids/practitioners can go 76-84 mm. Smaller wheels provide a lower center of gravity and a secure feel at low to medium speeds.
  • Wheel hardness (durometer): 82A-85A rolls well on Danish asphalt. Softer wheels (around 82A) provide grip and comfort. Harder wheels (85A) last a little longer and roll slightly faster.
  • Ball bearings (ABEC/ILQ): ABEC says something about tolerances - not the whole experience. Lubricated, clean bearings matter more. Maintenance makes the biggest difference in reality.
  • Closure: Combine lace, powerstrap and micro ratchet. Children can buckle themselves and get a stable heel lock. Teach the child: lace bottom = foothold, strap = heel lock, buckle = safety and fine-tuning.
  • Brake: Heel brake helps beginners. Advanced riders can learn T-stop. Start with brake fitted and only remove it when the child brakes safely without it.

Size guide in mm - quick way to get the right fit

Measure your child's foot length in millimeters: Place the heel against a wall, place a piece of paper under the foot, draw in front of the longest toe and measure. Add 5-8 mm to the measured length as a growth margin, but avoid too much air as this will cause sloppiness and rubbing.

  • Adjustable inliners: Choose an adjustable model if your foot grows quickly. Always adjust so that the toes have some room and the heel is secure.
  • Fit check: The foot should not push hard against the toe. The toe can just touch when the child is standing upright - but should not pinch while driving.
  • Socks: Use a normal sports sock (not too thick). Too thick a sock will change the fit significantly.
  • Fine-tuning: Start by lacing, lock the powerstrap over the instep and click the micro-buckle at the end.

3 wheels vs. 4 wheels for kids

  • 4 wheels (classic setup): Low center of gravity and stable steering. Best for learning technique, cornering and braking. Standard for most kids.
  • 3 wheels (larger wheels): Higher speed and longer roll. Requires more balance. Suitable for older/practiced kids who ride longer trips and want fewer obstacles in the roadway.

Tip: If your child has small feet, four smaller wheels often provide more control. Older children can gradually try three-wheel setups once they get the basic technique down.

Safety first - choose a helmet and protect knees, elbows and wrists

A skater helmet protects the head, while knee, elbow and wrist guards reduce scrapes and sprains. Always start with the right equipment, practice braking on a flat surface and ride with attention.

Maintenance - how to keep wheels and bearings lasting longer

  • Clean wheels: Wipe off gravel and dust after rides. Turn the wheels so they wear evenly.
  • Ball bearings: Keep bearings clean and lightly lubricated. This ensures quiet rolling and fewer stops for service.
  • Tighten screws: Go over screws and axles every 2-3 trips.
  • Drying: Remove the liner and air the boot after rain or sweat.

FAQ - inline skates for kids

When are kids ready for inline skates?

Most are ready around 3-5 years old if balance and motor skills are in place. Start for a short time at a time on level ground and with full protection.

What wheel size is good for kids?

64-76 mm fits most beginners. Smaller wheels provide control and a low center of gravity. Older kids can go towards 76-84 mm.

What is the difference between 3 and 4 wheels?

4 wheels are most stable for new skaters. 3 wheels roll faster and require more balance, so it's best for older/practiced kids.

Should I choose adjustable roller skates?

Yes, if the foot grows quickly. Choose a model with multiple size steps and a fixed heel grip. The fit should be snug without pinching.

Which brake do you recommend for kids?

Start with a heel brake fitted. Learn T-stop later when the child masters balance and control.

What does ABEC number mean and is it important?

ABEC are tolerances. Clean and properly lubricated bearings mean more to the experience than a higher ABEC number.

How do I measure the right size?

Measure foot length in mm from wall to toe. Add 5-8 mm for growth. Adjust the skate so that the heel is firm and the toes have some space.

What safety equipment should my child use?

Skater helmet and knee, elbow and wrist guards. See our helmets and protection.
